THE 7 R'S OF CLOUD MIGRATION

Updated: May 10

Digital transformation is re-imagining the way a business is done by using digital technologies to transform the business processes, culture and add value to the customer experience. Sustainable growth, quality decision-making and better customer interaction are the benefits of the digital transformation process.

In the digital transformation process there are many ways by which you can migrate your applications to the cloud. In this blog, we will go over different strategies that any company can leverage to migrate their data to the cloud. Before the migration phase, it is essential to determine the current environment, its dependencies, types of servers and applications, licenses and much more.

Cloud migration involves 7R's which are described below :

Retire – In the migration process we might discover that a significant number of on-premises application's are no longer required so they are either decommissioned or removed from your source environment.

Retain – Certain application's are retained in place on-premises for the time being because they may require major refactoring before they are migrated.

Re-locate – The applications are not rewritten, no new hardware is purchased and no modification on the existing operations. Simply, the infrastructure is moved to the cloud from the on-premises. No alt text provided for this image

Re-purchase – Instead of purchasing replacement on-premises systems and being locked into perpetual licenses we switch to a different product, typically by moving from a traditional license to a Software on demand/ Software as a Service (SaaS) model.

Re-host – Also known as the Lift and shift method, is one of the fastest ways to move an application to the cloud without making any changes to take advantage of cloud capabilities. This method can be automated to speed up the migration process. The right infrastructure can help this transition and performance on the Cloud.

Re-platform – Also known as the Lift and reshape method, where the core architecture of the application remains unchanged. We move an application to the cloud, and introduce some level of optimization to take advantage of cloud capabilities.

Re-architect – This option has enabled modernization of outdated legacy applications that are not suited for the cloud environment. We move an application and modify its architecture by taking full advantage of cloud-native features to improve agility, performance, and scalability.

This typically involves porting the operating system and database.
